Which 195 countries are in the list

The list holds the 193 member states of the United Nations and the 2 non-member observer states, the State of Palestine (Palestine) and the Holy See (Vatican City). The General Assembly gave Palestine that status in resolution A/RES/67/19 of 29 November 2012. Tick UN member state alone to leave the two observers out. Dependent territories such as Greenland, Puerto Rico or Hong Kong are not countries in this sense and are not in the list.

Each pick shows the country’s flag and its short English name, as the Unicode Consortium’s CLDR locale data spells it, with the official name the UN Statistics Division uses underneath. For 26 countries the two differ: Nauru is listed by the UN as Naoero, Iran as Iran (Islamic Republic of) and Vietnam as Viet Nam, while Türkiye and Czechia are spelled the same in both. Copy and the .txt download give the short names; the .csv adds the official name and both ISO codes. Flags are emoji built from the two-letter ISO code, so a system without flag emoji, such as Windows, shows the two letters instead.

Continents and UN M49 regions

Regions come from the M49 standard of the UN Statistics Division. M49 has five large regions; here the Americas are split in two, so North America means Northern America, Central America and the Caribbean, and South America is the M49 region of that name. Inside each continent the region menu uses M49’s sub-regions, and for Africa south of the Sahara and for Latin America the smaller intermediate regions, which gives 22 regions in all.

With no filter each country has a 1 in 195 chance, so a continent’s share of the draw follows its count: Africa, with 54 countries, comes up about 28% of the time, and Oceania, with 14, about 7%. How many countries are there in the world?

There is no single count of the countries in the world. The random country generator uses 195: the 193 member states of the United Nations and the 2 observer states, the Holy See and the State of Palestine. Lists that also count dependent territories come out higher.

Can I pick a random country from one continent?

Yes. The country generator draws from the continents you tick, or from a single M49 region such as Western Africa or South-eastern Asia. Africa has 54 countries in this list, Asia 48, Europe 44, North America 23, Oceania 14 and South America 12.

Which continent are Türkiye and Russia in?

In the UN M49 standard, which the country generator follows, Türkiye and Cyprus are in Western Asia, and Russia (the Russian Federation) is in Eastern Europe. A draw limited to Europe can return Russia but not Türkiye.

Are territories like Greenland included?

No. The country generator holds only the 193 UN member states and the 2 observer states; dependent territories such as Greenland, Puerto Rico and Hong Kong are not in it.
